Eric Bloodaxe and Gunnhild ruled together as King and Queen of Norway, then again as King and Queen of Northumbria from the Norse stronghold of Jorvik (York). Gunnhild — called Gunnhild konungamóðir, 'mother of kings' — outlived Eric by three decades, raising their sons in exile and placing her eldest, Harald Greycloak, on the Norwegian throne. Their partnership is the dramatic core of the historical record, and now the subject of Amazon Prime Video's Bloodaxe.
