How Vikings named their children

Most Norse names were built from two old words — often an animal, a weapon or a god, joined to a quality. Thor and stone make Thorstein; eagle and bear make Arnbjørn. Names often ran in families, reusing part of a parent's or grandparent's name.

Instead of surnames, people used their father's (sometimes their mother's) name: Ragnarsson, "son of Ragnar", or Ragnarsdóttir, "daughter of Ragnar". Iceland still names people this way today.

Many also carried a byname describing their looks, character or deeds — Erik the Red, Harald Fairhair, Ingvar the Far-Travelled.

Are these real Viking names?

Yes. Every name here is built from Old Norse name elements found in runestone inscriptions, the sagas and early records. Spellings are simplified for modern readers, and the meanings are the traditional readings of each part — for a few names, scholars still debate the details.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Viking name?

Enter your first name, choose what you want your name to carry, and the generator matches you with a real Old Norse name, a byname and — if you add a parent's name — a Norse-style surname.

Did Vikings have last names?

Not in the modern sense. They used the father's name (and sometimes the mother's) plus -son or -dóttir, often together with a byname.

How do I write my Viking name in runes?

The Vikings wrote with the Younger Futhark, a 16-rune alphabet. The generator shows your name in the Younger Futhark and in the older Elder Futhark. For longer text, try our Rune Translator.

Can I put my Viking name on a shirt or necklace?

Yes — our personalized pieces set your name in Elder Futhark runes.
