What is a bind rune?

A bind rune, sometimes written bindrune, is two or more Elder Futhark runes joined onto a single vertical stave so they read as one mark. The practice is old — bind runes appear on Migration-Age bracteates, weapons, and grave goods across the Germanic North — and it was one of the ways a carver could layer meaning into a single carved symbol.

People still create a bind rune today for the same reasons they always did: as a personal mark, a protection bindrune to keep close, or a small charged design tying a few ideas together. This maker uses the twenty-four Elder Futhark bindrunes — the oldest runic alphabet, and the one most people picture when they think of runes — and gives you a live preview so you can feel how the runes bind before you commit to the design.

To design your own bind rune, pick the runes whose meanings speak to what you're marking — strength, love, safe travel, a name, a moment. Two or three runes usually read the cleanest; four or five give a denser mark. Order matters visually but not spiritually — arrange them the way that looks right to you.
