The pentacle — a five-pointed star inside a circle — is one of the oldest protective symbols in Western folk tradition, long used to represent the five elements in balance: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. Paired with the sunburst and crescent moon, it speaks to Winter Solstice's own balance of dark and light. Winter Solstice itself is the same turning point that Norse and Germanic peoples marked as Yule, the old midwinter festival that came long before Christmas.
