Eric Bloodaxe — Eirikr Haraldsson — was a son of Harald Fairhair, the king who first unified Norway. Eric took the Norwegian throne after killing several of his own brothers to secure it, a ruthlessness that earned him his name and, eventually, his downfall when his own nobility turned against him. Driven from Norway, he became King of Northumbria not once but twice, ruling the Norse city of Jorvik — modern York — before dying in battle at Stainmore in 954. His story of ambition, exile, and reinvention is the subject of Bloodaxe, Michael Hirst's upcoming Amazon Prime Video series. This mug carries his portrait and his axe as a nod to a king who ruled two kingdoms and answered to no one.
