ᛟ · The meaning behind the design
Symbols carried, not borrowed.
This map traces the real Viking-Age journey of Erik Bloodaxe — Eiríkr Haraldsson, c. 895–954 — from his father Harald Fairhair's Western Norway to Jórvík, the Norse name for York, where he ruled as King of Northumbria twice, with Denmark marked as part of the wider Norse world he moved through. The design's own legend distinguishes confirmed historical locations from later saga tradition, and it does not claim more certainty than the sources allow — exact Viking-Age sailing routes are unknown, so the paths shown are a considered historical impression, not a literal record. Erik's story ended at the Battle of Stainmore in 954, but the crossing between Norway and Northumbria remains one of the best-attested royal journeys of the Viking Age — a tribute to a restless king whose life still bridges history and saga.
