This design traces the real Viking-Age journey of Erik Bloodaxe — Eiríkr Haraldsson, c. 895–954 — from his father Harald Fairhair's Western Norway to Jórvík, the Norse name for York, where he ruled as King of Northumbria twice. The map distinguishes confirmed historical locations from later saga tradition, marking the crossing that took an exiled Norwegian king and made him ruler of one of Viking-Age Britain's most important cities. Erik's story ended at the Battle of Stainmore in 954, but his crossing between Norway and Northumbria remains one of the best-documented royal journeys of the Viking Age. It's a tribute to a restless king whose legacy still endures.
