The Yule Goat (julebukk in Norwegian, julbock in Swedish) is one of the oldest symbols of the Scandinavian midwinter season, with roots reaching back to pre-Christian Norse and Germanic Yule celebrations. Traditionally woven from the last sheaf of the autumn harvest and bound in straw, the goat was linked to the god Thor, whose chariot was drawn by two goats, and to old beliefs about protecting the household through the darkest part of the year. Long after Yule blended into Christmas, the straw goat endured as a decoration and a symbol of good fortune — most famously as the enormous Gävle Goat raised in Sweden each December. Today it's a beloved, lighthearted piece of Nordic heritage, often set beside the tree as a nod to older ways of marking the turning of the year.
