In Scandinavian folk belief the tomte, called nisse or julenisse in Norway, is the small, bearded guardian of the farm. He watched over the house and the animals through the long winter and expected thanks for it: on Christmas Eve a bowl of rice porridge with a knob of butter was left out for him. Forget the butter, the old stories say, and the tomte would make mischief all year. Many Norwegian and Swedish families still set out porridge for the nisse on Christmas Eve.
