ᛟ · The meaning behind the design
Symbols carried, not borrowed.
In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the great World Tree, described in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda as an ash whose branches and roots hold the nine realms together. An eagle sits in its crown, the squirrel Ratatoskr runs between the heights and the roots, the serpent Nidhogg gnaws below, and the Norns tend the tree at the well of Urd. In modern interpretation it is often read as a symbol of connection, life and the cycle of growth, which is why it is so often drawn as a Tree of Life. Here it is set inside a circle of interlaced knotwork. The runes above are the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet, used from roughly the 2nd to the 8th century. A name in runes is a transliteration rather than a translation: each rune stands for a sound, so your name is written as it sounds, in the old letters.
