In Norse mythology the Valkyries were winged warrior-maidens who chose which fighters fell in battle and carried the honoured dead to Odin's hall of Valhalla; their name means "choosers of the slain." They are often associated with courage, fate and protection, moving between the world of the living and the halls of the gods. The crescent moon and twin ravens in this design echo Odin's ravens Huginn and Muninn—thought and memory—who watched over the fallen. In modern interpretation the Valkyrie has become a symbol of strength, independence and facing one's destiny without flinching.
