The shield wall, or skjaldborg, was the defining Viking battle formation — warriors standing shoulder to shoulder with shields locked edge to edge, turning a line of individuals into a single wall of defense. It's one of the most recognizable images of Viking warfare and the tight-knit bonds it demanded. Here that image of unity and readiness is reimagined for the holidays, crossed axes hung with sleigh bells standing in for the old battle-line camaraderie of standing together against the dark of midwinter.
