In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the World Tree, the great ash at the centre of the cosmos whose roots and branches connect the nine worlds. In modern interpretation it is often associated with roots, family and connection, which is why it suits a new arrival's first keepsake. The runes above it are the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet, used from roughly the 2nd to the 8th century. A name in runes is a transliteration rather than a translation: each rune stands for a sound, so your baby's name is written as it sounds, in the old letters.
