ᛟ · The meaning behind the design
Symbols carried, not borrowed.
The Yule goat, julebukk in Norway, is one of the oldest Christmas symbols in Scandinavia. Many people link it to Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, the goats that pulled Thor's chariot, though historians debate how direct that connection is. In older folk belief the Yule goat made sure Christmas preparations were done properly, and in parts of Scandinavia it brought the gifts before the julenisse and Father Christmas took over. In Norway the custom lives on as julebukking: dressing up and going door to door between Christmas and New Year.
