Erik Bloodaxe was a real Viking king — son of Harald Fairhair, who first united Norway under one crown. Erik ruled Norway in the 930s before being driven out and crossing the North Sea, where he became King of Northumbria, ruling twice from the Norse city of Jorvik, now York. He was killed in 954 at the Battle of Stainmore, ending the age of Norse kings ruling English cities. His name, Bloodaxe, is thought to come either from his skill with the weapon or the blood spilled securing his throne — a fitting emblem for a design built around raw, warrior strength.
