Rune Tattoos

Runes are an alphabet, not a code of symbols, so a rune tattoo spells sounds. Most modern tattoos use the 24-rune Elder Futhark; the Vikings themselves used the 16-rune Younger Futhark.

Where runes come from

The Elder Futhark was used from around the 2nd to the 8th century. During the Viking Age, Scandinavians wrote with the shorter Younger Futhark, carving names, memorials and messages on runestones and everyday objects.

Each rune also has a traditional name and meaning, such as Algiz (protection) or Fehu (wealth), which is why single runes are popular tattoos.

What a rune tattoo means

A name, a word, a single rune's meaning, or a bind rune combining several runes into one personal sign.

Design ideas

  • A name or word in runes along the forearm, spine or collarbone
  • A single meaningful rune: Algiz, Fehu, Othala, Dagaz
  • A personal bind rune made from your initials
  • A ring of runes around a Vegvisir or Yggdrasil

Good to know

Spell by sound, not by English letters, and double-check every rune; mistakes are common. Use our free Rune Translator, design a bind rune in the Bind Rune Maker, or order a custom bind rune drawn for you.
